Lake Obama? Superior Idea.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Gov. Gavin Newsom weighed into America's rapidly expanding debate over what to call large bodies of water Sunday, suggesting that if President Donald Trump can rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” there is no reason Democrats should sit on the shoreline and watch.

Newsom proposed renaming Lake Superior “Lake Obama.”

“It would be superior,” Newsom said. “Literally. I don't know how much clearer we can make this.”

Trump recently ordered the federal government to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” arguing that the lake is an important part of American history and economic prosperity.

Newsom said the president may have unintentionally established an exciting new precedent.

“For years, Americans have just accepted that lakes already have names,” Newsom said. “Apparently that was a failure of imagination.”

Under Newsom's proposal, Lake Superior would become Lake Obama on California maps, state websites and anywhere else California has absolutely no jurisdiction whatsoever.

Asked why former President Barack Obama should have a lake named after him, Newsom said the choice was obvious.

“Lake Superior is calm, cool, extremely popular in Chicago and considerably larger than most people realize,” Newsom said. “The parallels are uncanny.”

Newsom acknowledged one potential obstacle: California is approximately 1,500 miles from Lake Superior and has no shoreline on any of the Great Lakes.

“I don't see how that's relevant anymore,” he said.

The governor also dismissed concerns that individual states and presidents casually renaming geographic features could eventually make maps incomprehensible.

“That's why we have Google,” Newsom said. “Depending on where you live, your phone can just tell you what your government would prefer the lake to be called.”

Newsom said his administration is not currently considering renaming the other Great Lakes, although staff members have reportedly circulated several possibilities, including Lake Clinton, Lake Carter, Lake Biden and Lake Other Obama.

Lake Michigan would remain Lake Michigan for now.

“Michigan is a swing state,” Newsom explained. “We're not idiots.”

The White House did not immediately respond to Newsom's proposal, although one administration official reportedly questioned whether California has the authority to rename a lake located more than a thousand miles away.

Newsom welcomed the objection.

“Excellent,” he said. “Now we're getting somewhere.”
